The second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the International Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP2) has been held from 19 to 23 November 2018 at the International Conference Centre in Geneva, Switzerland.

The countries involved in the event, including Italy, have discussed many topics including the following:

  • Effectiveness evaluation framework for the implementation of all measures envisaged by the Minamata Convention
  • Mercury emissions
  • Waste management containing mercury
  • Capacity building, technical assistance and technology transfer, in particular to developing countries
  • Financial support mechanisms for the implementation of the Convention.

A team of experts composed by representatives of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea Protection, by researchers of the CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research (CNR-IIA) and by representatives of other Italian Governmental Institutions, took part to COP2, with Dr. Nicola Pirrone designated by the Ministry for the Environment Protection as Head of the Italian Delegation.

The CNR-IIA has been involved in different preparatory meetings and has participated to the exhibition booth, addressed to all participating countries at international level.

Moreover the CNR-IIA has taken part to numerous side events and meetings organized in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme and other research institutions.
